In 2025, our REU program will run from May 19 to July 25. During this ten-week program, you will participate in a number of activities in addition to your laboratory research, including:
- Trainings and workshops in laboratory safety, research ethics, presentation skills, scientific writing, and applying to graduate school
- Weekly faculty-student lunches where you will have the chance to hear from faculty mentors about their career paths and how they have overcome challenges they faced along the way
- Weekly journal clubs in which you will present a paper from the current literature and lead your fellow students in a discussion of the science (all with guidance from your graduate student mentors!)
- Practice and give a presentation on your summer research
Additionally, you will have plenty of time to get to know your fellow REU students and through social events such as:
- Weekly Friday afternoon social hours after scheduled trainings and workshops
- Weekend outings in the city of Pittsburgh, including a riverboat tour and trips to the Carnegie museums, the local amusement park (Kennywood), and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball games
- Pizza dinners and other informal activities with REU students in Pitt’s Computational and Systems Biology programs (who will be staying in the same dorms with you on campus)
A detailed schedule of events will be provided on your acceptance to the program.
